Metepenagiag Health Centre (Red Bank)
This Health Centre offers a Community Health Nurse (CHN) three days per week, who provides limited diabetes-related counseling and management advice, blood glucose and blood pressure screening clinics on occasion, quarterly diabetes educational events, and home visitation as required. VON offers footcare clinics at the Health Centre every six weeks.
The Health Care Coordination program home support workers are available to manage the home care needs of diabetic patients (i.e.: homemaker services, monitoring wound management etc.). The CHN assists the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (ADI) team in organizing and delivering healthy lifestyle education programs to the school children in the community. Annual diabetes screening is available for all students in the community school. In addition, the prenatal program has a gestational diabetes-monitoring mandate.
The MANGO program (based in the Miramichi Zone (Horizon Health Network) is very active in the community in initiating and supporting any healthy lifestyle programs in the home, school and community. MANGO offers a Registered Dietitian who works regularly with the health staff and the ADI team to deliver such programs. Foot care clinics are offered here every 6 weeks, by VON.
ADI prevention and promotion programs are available on demand, with limited financial assistance for non-benefit diabetes-related supplies (on a case-by-case basis), as well as medical transportation services for in-town and long distance appointments.
